Whilst history is extremely important, we believe that black children should also have the luxury of getting lost in a fun and engaging fictional story that features a black lead. It’s a known fact that self-image and well-being directly impact a child’s capacity to learn.

Woke Babies ultimately seeks to solve some of the universal problems identified, not just in the uk’s educational system; Where children do not have equal access to diverse books/ materials, by encouraging the inclusion of black and minority heroes in children’s books and resources globally.

The inclusion of diverse heroes continues to be a major problem within the uk as the latest figures from the centre for literacy in primary education show that just 15% of the children’s books published feature ethnic minority protagonists, and only 3% feature black heroes despite the fact that a third of the uk’s school population is from ethnic minority backgrounds. According to the latest government statistics published as of 5th march 2021, only 56% of black caribbean key stage 2 pupils meet the expected reading, writing, and mathematics standards.

Woke Babies aims to be the leading subscription service providing a solution to these issues. We provide children aged 0-11 with a monthly themed discovery box, which includes a selection of books featuring a black protagonist alongside uniquely designed woke babies learning resources and activities. We also work closely with schools in and around the uk providing diverse and inclusive books for their classrooms.
