THE BENEFITS OF READING TO YOUR BABY

The Woke Babies online shop has a range of books for all children from early years to tweenhood. With our incredible range of picture books filled with lyrical text and stunning illustrations, it’s never too early to start reading our books to your baby. Reading to your baby helps build self-esteem, vocabulary and helps expand the imagination. Despite all of the benefits proven, data from Nielsen Book UK shows that only 45% of children aged between 0-2 are read to everyday.

Your baby begins to recognise your voice in the womb. As a newborn they won’t understand the words you’re saying but hearing different sounds and rhythms will help develop their hearing and set the foundation for enhanced listening skills later on.

It’s important to be expressive when reading to your baby, hearing you use different tones will help support their social and emotional development as they begin to recognise emotions.

As your child turns a few months old, their eyesight will improve allowing them to appreciate picture books more. This is a great time to introduce board books with interactive features such as lift-the-flap and touchy-feely books.

Children who enjoy reading are three times more likely to have good mental wellbeing than children who don’t enjoy it.

Laying these foundations early is incredibly important. Creating a set reading time regularly with your child, allowing this to follow them into independent reading and eventually adulthood. A study from an issue of the journal Social Science & Medicine found that on average, people who read for just 30 minutes a day were found to live for almost two years longer than those who don’t.
